Brunei UTB: Building a Smart Campus Convenience Experience with AI Grab & Go

A modern university campus is more than a place for teaching and research. It is also a living environment where students, lecturers, staff, and visitors move between classrooms, libraries, laboratories, dormitories, event spaces, and offices throughout the day.
At Universiti Teknologi Brunei, the demand for convenient food, drinks, snacks, and daily essentials is naturally high. However, traditional campus retail often faces several limitations: fixed operating hours, limited manpower, checkout queues during breaks, and difficulty serving different traffic patterns across the day.
For a technology-focused university, the goal was not only to provide another small convenience store. The project needed to become part of a broader smart campus vision.
During UTB-STE CONNECT 2025, under the theme of Technology Innovations for a Sustainable Future, the Byte-N-Go AI store became a practical demonstration of how intelligent retail can support campus life, digital transformation, and future-ready infrastructure.
The project needed to solve several key needs:
- Faster campus convenience
Students, staff, and visitors need quick access to snacks, drinks, packaged food, and daily essentials between classes, meetings, and events. - Flexible service hours
Campus demand does not always follow traditional retail schedules. A smarter store model can provide service with less dependence on cashier availability. - Compact campus deployment
University spaces need clean, efficient, and well-organized retail formats that can fit into high-traffic areas without requiring a large store footprint. - Technology demonstration
As an innovation-driven campus, UTB needed a real-world example that could connect AI, IoT, digital payment, and sustainable service models. - Scalable smart campus model
The solution should be suitable not only for one location, but also for future deployment across libraries, dormitories, lecture halls, research buildings, and event venues.
To meet these needs, Cloudpick supported the launch of the Byte-N-Go AI unmanned store experience at UTB.

Cloudpick provided the AI-powered unmanned retail technology behind the Byte-N-Go store, combining computer vision, smart sensing, access control, automated checkout, and real-time backend management.
The shopping journey is designed to be simple and natural:
Enter the store
Users access the store through a controlled entry gate, creating a secure and trackable shopping environment.
Pick products freely
Customers select snacks, drinks, packaged food, and daily items directly from open shelves.
Walk out without manual checkout
There is no need to scan barcodes one by one, wait for a cashier, or use a traditional checkout counter.
AI recognition and automatic settlement
Cloudpick’s system identifies the selected products, generates the order, and updates transaction and inventory data automatically.
Compared with vending machines, the Byte-N-Go store offers a wider product range and a more natural browsing experience. Compared with traditional campus convenience stores, it reduces checkout friction and allows the store to operate with lower labor dependency.
The store also acts as a living technology showcase. Visitors at UTB-STE CONNECT 2025 were able to see how AI-powered retail works in a real campus environment, from entry control to product recognition and automated settlement.
For a university setting, this creates value beyond retail. It becomes an interactive smart campus application, connecting technology education, daily services, and sustainable operations in one visible scenario.
