  • Traditional offline advertising feels like a "black box." The brand spends huge budgets on in-store displays and co-branded fixtures, but gets little feedback on who bought what, why they chose it, or whether they will return.

  • The distribution system also creates a wall between the brand and its customers. Coca-Cola sells through distributors and retailers, but can hardly reach end consumers directly. That makes it difficult to build a private user pool, push new products, or run precision marketing.

Ironically, Coca-Cola has long relied on vending machines as a successful near-field channel. In Japan alone, the company operates over 950,000 vending machines, accounting for nearly 30% of the country's beverage sales. But vending machines have limits – only ~30 SKUs, no user data, no branding experience.

Coca-Cola HBC, a major bottling partner in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, decided to go further. It needed a next-generation smart retail terminal that could upgrade the vending machine model while solving the brand's deeper offline pain points.

Coca-Cola HBC partnered with Cloudpick and Kende Retail Operation Kft. to launch Hungary's first micro unmanned retail store. The store is exclusive to Coca-Cola products – a brand-dedicated unmanned shop.

Entering is simple: tap a card or phone, walk in, pick any item, and leave. The AI system automatically detects what you take and completes the payment upon exit. No cashier, no queue, no scanning.

The solution combines computer vision, sensors, and edge computing to track customer behavior: entry time, shopping paths, dwell time on products, purchase frequency, and more.

Crucially, customers can bind their WhatsApp, LINE, Facebook, or Messenger accounts when entering. This turns every buyer into a traceable digital user – a direct connection between the brand and its consumers.

The store carries up to 300 SKUs – ten times more than a typical vending machine. New products can be launched with a single click in the backend, with no need for retailer training or shelf negotiation.

The store itself becomes a content generator. With its futuristic design, custom Coca-Cola red lighting, and dynamic screens, it invites young consumers to take photos and share on Instagram, TikTok, or Xiaohongshu – turning customers into brand storytellers.
