In Japan’s Hokuriku region, nursing homes and senior care facilities face a growing challenge: providing convenient access to daily necessities for residents and staff without increasing operational burdens. Many elderly residents have limited mobility, and traditional retail options are often located far from care facilities. Staff working night shifts also struggle to find open stores for quick purchases.

DAIWA TSUSHIN, a Tokyo-listed security equipment company headquartered in Kanazawa, recognized an opportunity to deploy its AI-powered unmanned store technology in a nursing home salon setting. The goal was to create a 24-hour, staff-free retail point that could serve residents, their families, and care workers – all without requiring additional personnel.

The salon environment, typically a social hub within nursing homes, was identified as an ideal location. It offers a familiar, comfortable space where residents already gather, making it a natural fit for a small retail point that operates around the clock.

Cloudpick Solution

DAIWA TSUSHIN deployed its unmanned store system powered by Cloudpick’s AI camera technology combined with weight-sensor shelves and facial recognition – enabling a walk-through, checkout-free experience.

How it works:

Registration: Users (residents, staff, or family members) register their facial information and credit card in advance via a dedicated smartphone app. Family members can assist elderly residents with the one-time registration process.

Entry: At the store entrance, customers simply hold their face over a tablet terminal. The gate opens automatically with a voice greeting.

Shopping: The store offers a carefully curated selection of daily necessities, snacks, beverages, and personal care items suitable for seniors and care facility staff.

Exit & payment: When customers walk out, AI cameras track “who” took “what,” and shelf weight sensors detect item removal. The system automatically completes payment via the registered credit card. No cash, no checkout, no waiting.

Result

The Hokuriku nursing home salon store operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, providing round‑the‑clock access to essentials for residents, families, and care staff.

Key outcomes:

  • 24/7 access for all: Residents can shop anytime – even during night hours when care staff are on duty.

  • Reduced staff burden: The store requires no additional staffing, freeing care workers to focus on their primary responsibilities.

  • Senior-friendly design: Facial recognition eliminates the need for smartphones or cards at the point of entry – a significant advantage for elderly users who may struggle with mobile apps.

  • Family convenience: Visiting family members can easily pick up gifts or essentials for their loved ones without leaving the facility.

  • Data-driven insights: The system tracks purchasing patterns, helping the facility better understand resident preferences and optimize product selection.

Challenges & adaptation: For elderly residents unfamiliar with smartphone registration, DAIWA TSUSHIN provides on-site support and holds explanatory sessions to help users complete the one-time registration process – ensuring that digital technology serves everyone, regardless of age.
